Other Health Impairment

An Other Health Impairment refers to an individual with a medical or health-related condition that significantly impacts their strength, level of alertness or attentiveness and/or vitality.

This includes symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD).

Specific Learning Disability

Specific learning disabilities are challenges in one’s ability to mentally access, process, understand, and apply academic content, specifically in reading, writing, and/or math.

Emotional Disability

Emotional Disability is a condition in which one experiences social-emotional or behavioral difficulties over an extended time and to such a severity that it negatively impacts learning, functioning, relationships, general mood/affect, and/or overall self-regulation.

Developmental Delay (ages 3-9)**

Significant delays in the development of cognition, motor skills, communication, social-emotional skills, and/or adaptive skills in children ages 3 through 9 years.

** Developmental Delay is not recognized as an area of special education eligibility in all states.

Intellectual Disability

Intellectual Disability is a condition in which an individual experiences significantly subaverage skills/development in cognition and reasoning, accompanied by significantly below-average adaptive behavior, such as the skills needed for daily independent functioning.

Autism

Autism is a social-communication developmental disorder significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three. Other characteristics often associated with autism include atypical speech patterns, repetitive behaviors or movements, anxiety responses to certain sensory experiences, and/or significant difficulty navigating changes in routine or expectations.
